Repeat 1st verse

“We Started sumthin” was a theme that derived from a request from a sync placement. I was using a platform that helps songs get licensed for sync placement in tv. The request was for a song that is focused on starting something. I took that suggestion literally and immediately came up with the bass line. Lauren’s vocals and her harmonies with herself sound so good on this song. Keith King does a great job of locking in on the drums with me on the bass. This was my first time having my older Brother A.Lee on a recording. he added some nice elements on synth that add to the 80's vibe. I wanted something that had the vibe of Chic. There’s nothing better than Nile Rogers, Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson locking in together!

This song was originally titled "Lady in a silk blue dress”. I wrote that song probably 15 years ago as a female empowerment song. I started to update it and the original concept and lyrics didn’t feel right. I think the original melody didn’t vibe anymore. I changed the lyrics and kept the concept of the main female character as a boss. The events in this song never happened to me in real life. I’ve had moments of running into friends and people that I haven’t seen in awhile. The fun part about those moments is that we all have lives and interesting things that happen to us. In this song the female character’s life took off and she is a public figure with a recognizable face. Life is what happens as we pursue this thing called happiness. This song is a sequel to “Hello Ol’ Friend” from the Alldayfunkshine album. Keith King gave me the best 4 on the floor. I am a 70’s baby and any chance to have a 70 or 80’s vibe I am taking it. Lauren was excellent on this song.

We’re all people, and we love in different ways

“Talk" was originally going to be a song called “A heart can be broken” written by T.Lee and William Young. Will was my first collaborator and partner in crime. We met when we were 18 while I was working at Sound Warehouse record store in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago. Will & I wrote a lot of songs together and Will sang lead on most of them. I wanted to record an updated version of the song with Will on lead vocals. Unfortunately that never happened. Will died on July 29th 2025. I rearranged the bass line from the original “A heart can be broken” because I wanted a steppers vibe (which is a Chicago thang). I wrote new lyrics and changed the title of the song to “Talk”.

“Talk” is what we all should be doing. On the surface it sounds like a relationship song between a couple but not really. The song is about neighbors and people who may not share the same ideas communicating. The great thing about art is that you can interpret it how you feel. Keith King did his thing capturing that steppers rhythm I wanted. Alex gave the song a guitar solo that was the icing on top. Lauren added elegant vocals that do a great job adding to the vibe.

“Call Me” is my attempt at a Bootsy type song. I love Booty’s "Munchies for your love” & “what’s a telephone bill”. I wanted to write a song from guitar instead of bass to spark different creative juices. I am not a proficient guitarist so I used an open tuning for this one. Once I was happy with the guitar part, the melody came while I was on a long drive from Chicago to Grand Rapids. I wanted the Bootsy vibe on my Swan Song bass so I used my MXR Envelope pedal underneath the low end. Lauren’s voice is like butta and she sounds so good on this song. Keith King was in pocket as always. My brother A.Lee adds the 80’s synth underneath. When I heard Sav’s guitar solo for the first time, It knocked me off my feet. P-funk is always an influence and if you don’t have George Clinton’s capitol catalog in your collection, you are missing some great material.

“Sunshine” is my attempt at a Curtis Mayfield song. I sang in falsetto on a recording I did with a friend and someone said “you’re trying to sound like Pharell.” No sir! I like Pharell but that is all Curtis. These lyrics just flowed during a cold Chicago winter’s day. I really love what Keith King does on this song. The drums have their own personality. I think I enjoy the instrumental almost as much as the vocal version. Of course Lauren’s vocals sound perfect. She does a great job making me sound like I know what I’m doing vocally.

“Is it true?” Is a fictional song from the perspective of a man who witnessed his significant other cheating. How would you approach a situation like that. How great would it be to have your partner admit to being untrue. Or, would it be better to catch them in a lie? I love Marving Gaye and the opening lyrics are the title of Marvin’s album “Here, my dear”. Marvin had divorced Anna and the proceeds from that album went to her in he divorce settlement. Alex does a nice job on guitar. He adds some nice soulful inflections that move the song in the right direction. I love what my big Sis Deborah does on vocals. She adds a nice contrast to what I am doing vocally. She gives the song its personality.

I was feeling an 80’s vibe when this song was put together. I programmed a beat and wanted my nephew to add a verse or 2 but I wasn’t feeling it after it was complete. I reached out to Sav and asked for a Steve Stevens inspired guitar and he was on point.

Sonia Massey was boiling water in her home

And she was murdered

She was killed by a man whose job

Was to protect her

“Fallin2pieces” is a song I dusted off from about 20 years ago. This is one of the first songs that I wrote from a bass line. In my early days of song writing I would write from melody, keyboard pattern or a guitar lick. In high school I had confidence in my melodies but not so much with my guitar licks. I was listening to a lot of Graham Central Station at the time. Larry Graham was definitely my north star when I got serious about Bass guitar. I was in my 20’s when I originally wrote the song and the lyrics at the time were raunchy. The hook is the same and I updated the verses. I wanted to comment on current events. Sonia Massey being murdered by the rogue cop really pissed me off. The line “I think of you and the world is fine” is a shout out to my wife. Fast forward to the current day and the cop that killed Sonia Massey recently died from cancer. Nuff said.
